Why aren't kitchen sinks made of ceramic too?

1. Durability: Kitchen Sinks Face Heavy-Duty Use
Ceramic sinks, such as those made from vitreous china or porcelain, are hard and smooth but relatively brittle. They can chip or crack if a heavy pot or pan is dropped into them. In contrast, stainless steel or composite granite sinks are impact-resistant and better suited to the rough-and-tumble environment of a kitchen.

2. Heat and Stain Resistance
While ceramic handles heat well, it’s prone to staining from coffee, turmeric, or acidic foods unless glazed perfectly. Additionally, sudden temperature changes (thermal shock) may cause fine cracks in ceramic. Stainless steel and fireclay (a type of ceramic used in some premium kitchen sinks) perform better under thermal stress and are less likely to stain.

3. Maintenance and Hygiene
Ceramic is non-porous when glazed, making it hygienic. However, chips or scratches can expose porous underlying material, trapping bacteria. Stainless steel and solid surface sinks are easier to clean, resist scratching, and don’t harbor germs as easily.

4. Weight and Installation
Ceramic sinks are heavy, requiring reinforced cabinetry and professional installation. In kitchens, where undermount or top-mount setups are common, lighter materials like stainless steel offer more flexibility and easier DIY installation.
