Honestly, I started writing this right after coming back from a client's warehouse in Quanzhou. He's been making stainless steel sinks for over a decade. Last year he lost two containers—one headed to New York, one to Hamburg. The New York one got stuck at port because the cUPC certificate had a typo in the model number. Just one letter off. The Hamburg one made it through customs, but then the buyer's German distributor ran a material test and found the nickel content was off by a few tenths of a percent. They demanded a return.

He's not alone. Out of every ten factory owners I've talked to, maybe two actually understand how US and EU standards differ. It's not because it's complicated. It's because nobody sits down and walks through it step by step. So here goes.


Let's start with the US.

The American system is basically a series of gates stacked on top of each other. There's no single "national sink standard." Instead, three layers work together to trip you up.

First is the federal drinking water safety thing. Back in 2014, Obama signed a bill that dropped the lead limit from 8% to 0.25%. But pay attention—it's the weighted average on wetted surfaces. Your sink could be 99% stainless steel, fine. But if the faucet or the solder joints go over that threshold, you're out. And since September 2023, the EPA added another twist: you now have to proactively certify compliance. You can't just assume you're good anymore.

Second are the model plumbing codes. Most states use either the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) or the International Plumbing Code (IPC). These dictate things like waste outlet diameter—at least 1½ inches for kitchen sinks, 2 inches for commercial ones. Sounds trivial, right? But in the US, inspectors carry tape measures. If your hole is too small, they won't sign off. You can sell a million units on Amazon, but if it doesn't fit the plumbing, it doesn't matter.

Third is the commercial side. If your sink ends up in a restaurant, hospital, or school cafeteria, you're looking at NSF/ANSI 2. This standard is all about cleanability. Can bacteria hide in a weld seam? Is the surface smooth enough to wipe down? 304 stainless steel is pretty much the floor. Forget 430—it almost never passes.

I once met a factory owner from Zhejiang who swore his 430 sinks passed some inspection. Turned out the lab wasn't even IAPMO-approved. His container landed in Los Angeles, got randomly checked by the local health department, and was sent straight back.

Now Europe.

Europe works completely differently. It's built on CE marking plus self-declaration. Meaning you say your product meets the standards, you keep the evidence handy, and regulators can ask to see it anytime.

The core standard is EN 13310:2015+A1:2018. It covers a bunch of stuff—resistance to dry heat, temperature changes, chemicals, surface stability, overflow performance. One spec sticks in my mind: overflow flow rate must be at least 0.20 liters per second. Sounds tiny. But imagine someone leaves the tap running. If the overflow can't handle it, water spills onto the floor faster than you can run to turn it off. That's the kind of detail that matters.

Here's something people miss: EN 13310 only applies to domestic kitchen sinks. Industrial kitchens don't fall under it. I've seen factories use domestic standards for commercial orders and get stopped at EU customs.

CE marking itself doesn't require a third party to get involved. But if you want buyers to trust you, or if your product carries higher risk, it's smart to bring in a notified body from the NANDO list. And you need a proper technical file—product specs, test reports, ISO 9001 cert, user manual, Declaration of Performance. Miss one document, and someone can argue you're not compliant.

Put the two systems side by side, and something interesting shows up.

The US approach is: "I don't trust you, so I'll have someone watch you." That's why they demand third-party listings—cUPC, NSF, ASME. Every step needs a stamp from an approved body.

Europe says: "You say you're good? Prove it." CE is self-declared, but your technical file has to be ready for inspection at any moment. And if they catch a problem, the consequences are worse than in the US—because false declaration is treated as fraud.

Time-wise, US certification usually takes four to eight weeks. Europe takes six to twelve. Cost-wise, the US side is lab testing plus certification fees. Europe runs about two to five thousand euros per model, plus whatever the notified body charges.

But honestly, money isn't the real headache. The real headache is that most factories don't know what they're doing.

I talked to a boss from Guangdong who told me his sinks had both CE and cUPC, so he could sell everywhere. I asked him to send me the certificates. The CE was issued by some random outfit nobody had heard of. The cUPC had a model number that didn't match the actual product. He had no idea anything was wrong.

This happens way too often.


A few practical things I've learned.

First, don't try to make one product fit both markets. In theory it's possible. In practice, the details will drive you crazy. Pick one market, nail it, then move to the next.

Second, lock in your drain size before you cut the mold. US wants 1½ inches minimum. Europe follows EN 695. Changing the mold later costs way more than spending two extra days confirming the spec upfront.

Third, don't cheap out on material. 304 stainless is the safest bet for both markets. 430 might save you a couple bucks per unit, but if it fails compliance, the cost of shipping back will eat up whatever you saved—and then some.

Fourth, find the right partners early. For the US, go with IAPMO. For Europe, pick a notified body from the NANDO list. Don't chase a bargain with some middleman who promises quick certificates. When those turn out invalid, your cargo sits at the dock and nobody's laughing.


Look, I'm not writing this to scare anyone. I just hate seeing factories lose months of work and thousands of dollars because of a screw, a drain hole, or a missing piece of paper.

Compliance, when you strip it down, is really just about thinking ahead. If you do that, it becomes your moat. If you don't, it's a trap.
